Health Anxiety Treatment
Gold Coast Therapy for Health Anxiety
Does a headache become a brain tumour by lunchtime? Do you check your body for lumps, changes or symptoms… then check again? Have you Googled your symptoms so many times you know the search results by heart? Does a reassuring word from your GP calm you for a day — maybe two — before the fear creeps back in?
Health anxiety is genuinely distressing, and it’s exhausting. It’s also very treatable.
What health anxiety really is
Health anxiety isn’t attention-seeking, and it isn’t “all in your head.” It’s a very real anxiety that latches onto your health, wiring your attention to every twinge, flutter and sensation your body makes — sensations most people never notice.
The cruel part is the cycle. Worry drives you to check, to research, or to seek reassurance. Each of those brings a moment of relief… which teaches your brain that the only way to feel safe is to keep checking. So the relief never lasts, and the loop tightens. Underneath it is usually a deep discomfort with uncertainty — the unbearable “but what if they missed something?”
You might recognise:
- Worry that interferes with work, sleep, and enjoying life
- Persistent fear of having, or developing, a serious illness
- Frequent body-checking, symptom-Googling, or reassurance-seeking
- Relief from reassurance that fades quickly and returns as doubt
- Interpreting normal sensations as signs of something serious
- Either over-visiting doctors — or avoiding them out of dread
- Constantly requesting and running more tests and scans

How we work with health anxiety
Genuine health concerns always deserve proper medical attention — we’re not here to talk you out of caring for your body. What we work on is the anxiety wrapped around it: the checking-and-reassurance cycle that’s feeding the fear rather than calming it.
Utilising Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness-based approaches, we gently loosen that cycle, build your tolerance for uncertainty (the real driver), and work with the deeper fears often sitting underneath — frequently about control, or loss. Alongside that, we bring in nervous-system and relaxation tools and Clinical Hypnotherapy when appropriate, so your body isn’t stuck on high alert. The aim is a calmer relationship with your health, where a normal twinge stays a normal twinge.
