suffered a setback

Are you having difficulty making the changes that are necessary to reach your full potential? Many people stumble over setting goals and taking the actions necessary to achieve them. This can come down to a lack of direction, not knowing where to start, or having difficulty overcoming perceived limitations. If you’re struggling to reach your full potential, however, there are a few key steps that you can take to overcome this.

Whether the setback you’ve suffered came about as a result of your own actions or something completely out of your control, you first need to stop giving yourself such a hard time. We all suffer setbacks throughout our lives and you’re only human. Even the best laid plans sometimes go awry. Moving forward and getting over the slump means putting a stop to beating yourself up.

You’re not alone. One of the most comforting things to learn is that setbacks happen to everyone. Think of three people you admire, and you can bet that they each suffered setbacks at one stage or another. Speaking with others about your setback can help you to understand just how common it is. If you’ve got a few trusted people in your circle that you can trust with this conversation, open up to them and have a discussion about what you’re going through. More than likely, they’ll have stories of their own setbacks to share with you. Once you begin to realise that you’re far from alone in this respect, you’ll start to feel much less defeated.

Don’t let your setback stop you from taking action to reach your goals. Whether you were aiming for a promotion that didn’t happen, or you suffered an injury that put certain plans on hold, there’s no time like the present for getting back at it and working towards those goals again. Take small steps, keep your emotional, physical and mental health in mind, and start again.

Setbacks have a way of teaching us things about ourselves that we could never have otherwise known. But that’s only possible if we embrace them, overcome the guilt and blame, and start looking at them as a learning opportunity. Think about what’s happened that led to your setback and determine what you can do differently next time around. Did you let stress and anxiety work you to breaking point? Learn that taking care of yourself is important to avoid burnout. Were you let down by someone you trusted? Remember that you are powerful and capable on your own and learn to believe in yourself again. Whatever has happened, there are lessons to take on board for next time, and you’ll come out all the stronger for it.

Has something shifted in your life that is irreversible? Perhaps an injury or illness has had a lasting effect on your health, and you’ve got to make changes to your lifestyle as a result? Overcoming setbacks doesn’t necessarily mean that the obstacles you’ve faced are no longer present. In the case of injury or illness, these might be things you’ll be living with for the rest of your life. One of the most fundamental aspects of human nature is our ability to adapt. Learning to live with changes in our lives and to work around the challenges they present can be incredibly rewarding. Sure, it doesn’t feel that way at first – far from it, in fact. But take your strength from the knowledge that you’re capable of more than you might imagine. Take a look at your goals, make adjustments to account for your change in circumstances, and get started with working towards those goals.  Be inspired by the many amazing people who have risen beyond enormous challenges and have thrived, for example, Paralympians.

We say it time and time again at Integrated Health Specialists, because it’s such an important message: You do not have to do this alone. So many of us avoid asking for help because we don’t want to be a burden on others, or because we don’t think our concerns are ‘worthy’ of help. What we teach all of our clients, and what we’ll teach you, is that you are worthy, you are capable, and you hold the key to your own success. And you just might benefit from a little help along the way from someone who has the skills to help you succeed.

Our Personal Breakthrough Program was designed specifically for this reason. Unlike any other therapy program you might encounter, our 14-week intensive program incorporates creative therapeutic techniques and processes to help you break through your limitations.
